Apparently, the traditional ski movie format is getting stale. Ski film festivals are hitting the road for winter tours, promising to break the traditional ski movie mold.
Fall is snowsports film release season, when brands and ski movie production houses feed preseason stoke with their latest offerings edited from last season. Many production houses and ski film festivals also go on tour with national and international dates to bring the films to you.

The modern ski movie template is a very loose narrative that’s usually secondary to the powder porn segments set to high-octane soundtracks. But if there’s a theme to the releases this fall, however, it’s the promise of something different.
“It’s not just about showcasing women skiing. It’s about showing the personalities, friendships, challenges and different ways we experience the mountains,” says Sierra Schlag, one of the pros featured on the Girl Winter Film Fest. One of the Girl Winter featured films is Winter Elements, which profiles the non-athlete women usually found behind the scenes in the snowsports industry.
Even Warren Miller is promising something different with its 77th release, Days Off, offering a look at professional skiers away from the slopes and competition. “Warren Miller has always been about more than a ski movie — it’s about telling the stories that make us laugh, cheer, and put us on the edge of our seats,” said Chris Leavell, VP Content Strategy and Production, Warren Miller Entertainment, in a press release.
Of course, this “different” approach isn’t a new phenomenon. The 2004 ski movie Not Another Ski Movie promised to break the mold — even if it turned out to be just another ski movie, shot on film instead of digital.
Female freeskiers Elyse Saugstad and Jackie Paaso had so much success with their 2024 film about motherhood as professional skiers, Here, Hold My Kid, that they’re premiering a sequel this season, Here, Hold My Kid: The Austrian Job. Part comedy, part real-life, the Kid films feature pro skiers, but are definitely not your standard ski movies.
Whether or not this year’s crop of snowsports films truly break the mold, they’re always a fun way to fuel preseason stoke. (And don’t worry, there will still be plenty of adrenaline-soaked powder porn amid the genre-bending.)
Most of these films can be streamed online these days, but if you want the theater viewing experience and the excitement of a live event, there are a number of ski film tours making the rounds over the next few months.
Girl Winter Film Fest
Back for a third annual national tour, Girl Winter Film Fest has a curated femme focus for ski videos and a robust schedule including festival dates in Portland (Maine and Oregon), the Midwest, the Rockies, and the East Coast. The aforementioned featured film, Winter Elements, promises to “elevate the experiences of everyday working women in the ski industry, putting them on the same pedestal as elite athletes.”
Teton Gravity Research
One of the pillar franchises of the modern ski movie, TGR is on tour as usual this fall, promoting their latest release, Actually, It Is Rocket Science. The 2026 TGR release should have no shortage of breathtaking descents as they focus on the calculations made by extreme skiers and riders.
Backcountry Film Festival
A wilder approach to ski films. The BCFF makes dozens of stops around North America and is the best place to see films dedicated to human-powered skiing and snowboarding.
Warren Miller
The ski movie franchise that inspired countless imitators is still going, and the 77th installment is on tour this winter. No Days Off is the Warren Miller feature film hosted by Katie Burrell.
Pangea Collective Freeride Film Tour
Action sports agency/production company Pangea Collective spotlights athletes such as veteran Dane Tudor and up-and-comer Isi Assler with a diverse lineup of ski and snowboard films. Find tour dates and locations here.
Mountainfilm
The touring version of this Telluride-based outdoor film festival isn’t ski-specific, but features plenty of films focused on sliding on snow.
Matchstick Productions
Crested Butte–based Matchstick is premiering their latest, The Way Out, with the world premiere in Crested Butte on Oct. 4. The film then launches on a world tour that runs into 2027 for the production house’s 34th annual ski movie featuring top pros dropping visually stunning lines from Alaska to Canada to Japan. View the trailer here.
Banff Film Festival Tour
The Banff Centre Festival (Oct. 31–Nov. 8) is a weeklong celebration of adventure and exploration, but if you’re not heading to Canada for it, the Film Tour visits 40 countries. Not every film is a ski or snowboard picture, but there are always several snowsports features, and Banff is a great place to catch the best of the best in outdoor film.
