If you have an Ikon Pass, you just got one mountain richer. Ikon parent Alterra Mountain Company confirmed it’s entering an agreement to purchase Solitude Mountain Resort in Utah.
When the deal closes this fall, Solitude will be included in the 2018-19 Ikon Pass. It will bring Alterra’s portfolio to 13 year-round mountain destinations in five U.S. states and three Canadian provinces. It already owns Deer Valley Resort in Utah, an hour from Solitude.
Solitude Mountain Resort is located 34 miles from Salt Lake City in Big Cottonwood Canyon. The 1,200-acre mountain contains 77 runs and three bowls, with 2,030 feet total vertical drop. Solitude’s off-piste terrain is also a popular draw.
Alterra already partners with Alta and Snowbird, also in Utah, to allow Ikon Pass holders to ski or snowboard at the resorts.
Solitude Would Be 4th Utah Resort on Ikon Pass
Solitude general manager Kim Mayhew said in a press release that she’s excited about Alterra’s ability “to grow and enhance the brand and culture that is Solitude.”
The quickly expanding company has previously stated its intention to retain the authentic character of each mountain it acquires.
The Solitude transaction is expected to close by the end of the third quarter of 2018. After it completes the purchase, Alterra will release final details on Solitude’s inclusion in the Ikon Pass.
Alterra introduced the Ikon Pass for winter 2018-2019. It competes directly with Vail Resort’s multi-mountain Epic Pass. The Ikon gives skiers and riders access to 26 mountain destinations throughout North America, including 12 Alterra Mountain Company destinations and 14 partner destinations.
