Kyle Hyatt
Outdoor Motoring Editor Kyle Hyatt is a lifelong automotive enthusiast who grew up camping and off-roading in the Pacific Northwest. He joined GearJunkie after stints at several major automotive publications and a few years freelancing.
Based in the Los Angeles area, Kyle loves driving up in the Angeles National Forest on two and four wheels. He’s currently in the process of turning his daily-driver Land Rover into a light car camping/overlanding rig, which is a questionable idea at best.

Experience: Outdoor motoring editor Kyle Hyatt has worked across the automotive industry for the last 23 years, doing everything from working at dealership parts counters to contributing to Forza Motorsport 4. Since 2017, he’s been writing about cars for some of the best publications online, including CNET Cars, Jalopnik, Edmunds, duPont Registry, Robb Report, and more.
Before all of this car stuff happened, Kyle spent his childhood in the Pacific Northwest, camping almost every weekend that it wasn’t raining (and plenty when it was). Whether it was tent camping with friends or spending time with his grandparents in a 1970s Airstream, his love of the outdoors and the freedom they offered grew.
Now, Kyle keeps that passion alive by car camping with his wife out of their sketchy 16-year-old Range Rover every chance they get. Luckily, being in sunny Southern California, where he’s lived for the last 13 years, the weather cooperates more often than not.
As the Motoring Editor for GearJunkie, Kyle is responsible for bringing you all of the relevant news and reviews on vehicles and overlanding gear. In this role, he’s committed to providing useful consumer advice with a strong focus on ethics, while hopefully also providing a few laughs along the way.

A Word From Kyle Hyatt
I’ve always been interested in things with a throttle. I spent a lot of time as a kid at racetracks around Washington while my dad managed the radios for all the track staff. Whether it was vintage sports car racing or motorcycle road racing, I was into it. Combine that with a lifelong love of writing, and it all starts to make sense.
I began working in the auto industry just after graduating from high school. My first few car jobs all saw me behind a parts counter, first retail (think NAPA and the like), then at a dealership. From there, I jumped into the world of video games and did a stint working on Forza Horizon 4, tweaking in-game vehicle colors, building licensing materials, and doing research. After Forza, I decided I didn’t want to go back into parts, so I went back to school instead. While in college, I got a job delivering press cars to journalists, which also gave me a peek at how automotive journalism works. From there, all it took was a move to Los Angeles, a whole bunch of luck, and support from friends and coworkers, and I got my first journalism job in 2017.
Outside of cars, motorcycles, and camping, I spend a lot of time reading, working on a couple of long-term project vehicles, and hanging out with my wife and our cats.
