The recall impacts about 3,000 mountain bikes in the U.S. and Canada.

This week, Santa Cruz recalled 2,600 aluminum-frame mountain bikes sold in the U.S. and another 216 sold in Canada, according to a notice from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The voluntary recall only affects certain models and colors of Santa Cruz and Juliana bikes, and only aluminum frames.

According to Santa Cruz, “Some aluminum frames were thermally damaged during a non-standard paint stripping operation and may bend or buckle, which could pose a fall hazard.”

It is unclear why these frames underwent a “non-standard paint stripping operation,” but the brand said it has received no reports of injuries resulting from the defect. So far, Santa Cruz said it has recorded four reports of pieces bending or breaking.

Impacted models retailed between June 2019 through October 2020. The frames sold for about $2,000 and complete bikes sold for $3,500-4,300.
