Roxanne Hall, a 58-year-old rockstar, accidentally set a record as the first woman to complete the 100-mile Across the Sky route 20 times.
“For a long time I did not realize that I would be the first woman to get 20,” said Hall. A local from Leadville, Colo., with a passion for biking, she entered the race back when the crowds were small and female racers were nearly nonexistent.
Now, the annual event known as Across the Sky is currently one of the most well-known MTB races. The event starts at 10,000 feet above sea level and rises to nearly 13,000 feet over the course of 100 challenging miles, drawing throngs of fans and athletes alike to the small mining town.
Only athletes in peak performance attempt the race, making Hall’s accomplishment of finishing it for the 20th time — following a mishap that left her hospitalized — all the more remarkable.
“I just kept telling myself if I could get on my bike, I can maybe possibly ride again, then I’m going to be OK,” Hall said.
