Woman Leads Tijuana River Cleanup, Removes 200 Tons Of Trash

In 13 years, Margarita Diaz mobilized an estimated 35,000 volunteers in and around Tijuana. Their goal? To clean up trash and revive area waterways.

Collectively, the group has removed more than 200 cubic tons of debris and trash from the Tijuana watershed.

That’s an unimaginable amount of garbage! But Diaz, the founder of the Proyecto Fronterizo de Educación Ambiental A.C. (Boarder Environmental Education Project) has remained a steady force through the years of work.

Her group, a leading advocate for water quality in Baja California, has a motto of: “Awareness Through Action.”

To that end, Diaz has trained more than 400 youth leaders to be stewards of clean water in the region.

By educating young people on the importance of clean water, the group is building the foundation of a community that will work for a cleaner environment in Baja California for years to come.
