When it comes to ultralight backpacking gear, no name looms quite as large as Hyperlite Mountain Gear. The Maine-based brand helped pioneer the category, innovating packs through the use of fabrics like Dyneema. Its packs and tents consistently earn top rankings in our best of guides, and legions of thru-hikers wear its products for thousands of miles.
For all of Hyperlite’s bona fides, the gear is not cheap, and famously so. Normally, a pack can easily cost over $400, but the brand is offering an extremely rare sale for a limited time. If a Hyperlite pack has been on your wish list for a while, now’s the time to grab one for a steal.
How the Sale Works

Hyperlite is currently offering a factory seconds sale. It’s discounting packs for a variety of reasons: the product is out of production, customers returned the item, or it has a cosmetic defect like loose threads. It groups products into four buckets:
- Discontinued: 20% Off: Gear is out of production, but has never been used.
- Very Good: 30% Off: Product has a minor cosmetic imperfection. Hyperlite describes these issues as “very difficult to identify unless you have a trained eye.”
- Good: 40% Off: Product has multiple cosmetic defects.
- Fair: 50% Off: Gear has some structural and cosmetic problems. The product may need a patch or repair.
Be sure to note that all sales are final and that stock is limited. Once a product is gone, it’s gone.
What’s on Sale
If you are on the hunt for an ultralight pack, this is the sale for you. Backpacking and mountaineering packs ranging in size from 40 to 70 liters are on sale. The 40-liter size of our favorite pack, the Southwest, is available in “good” condition for $209, a $140 discount. You can get a like-new, discontinued version for $280.

A 55-liter pack is great for a week-long trip, and Hyperlite is slashing prices on the Windrider 55, Junction 55, and Unbound 55. Get a Windrider 55 in “very good” condition for $265, a steep drop from its original $379 price tag.
There’s something for day hikers and trail runners, too. The Aero 28 has a running vest-style harness with plenty of pockets for easy access to supplies. It’s on sale for $245, a $105 savings.
