The Merrell Moab Speed targets sneaker-like comfort with hiking performance.

Building on the success of its Moab hiking shoe, Merrell introduced the Moab Speed hybrid for hikers who want a lighter shoe with the stability and protection built into the original.

This new shoe is Merrell’s way of adapting to the interests of its existing users and those coming to hiking from a running background. The Speed represents a new design using trail-proven materials.

Merrell Moab Speed Features

The Moab Speed is a lightweight, hybrid shoe Merrell designed to have the comfort of a sneaker, as well as the durability and protection of a purpose-built hiker.

In appearance, the Speed looks like a walking sneaker. However, the Speed has hiking shoe traits like a padded collar, rock plate sole, and protective toecap.

Harder to see is the tech inside the new offering. Merrell uses its FloatPro Foam in the midsole, which is its answer for cushioning. In the heel is Merrell Air Cushion, designed to absorb shock and add stability.

The materials are vegan-friendly and many incorporate recycled materials. For instance, the laces and lining are made from 100% recycled materials, while the Vibram Ecostep sole uses 30% recycled rubber.

Is the Moab Speed a Fit?

If you’ve found yourself wanting lighter hiking shoes on less technical trails, a hybrid shoe like the Speed may hit the “just right” mix. Runners who have worn their favorite trail running shoes for hiking and backpacking may have found that they lack enough protection and cushioning.

While the Moab Speed is designed to cut weight from its hiking-specific predecessor, it has more weight in the sole and midsole to protect and cushion feet better than strict running shoes.

If you understand the design intent behind a crossover like the Speed, you’ll understand the play between weight and protection. Merrell built these as an answer to find exactly that sweet spot.
