Leatherman ‘Darkside’: Meet the Latest Multitool From the Innovation Garage

Only 500 of Leatherman’s latest design have been made. And they go on sale today.

Black oxide finish and PVD coating don’t just add functionality to this new member of the Leatherman family, but they also reinforce its haunting monicker: The Darkside.

The second release from Leatherman’s Innovation Garage, The Darkside builds off the Charge multitool design. Like its Garage predecessor, Mr. Crunch, The Darkside is a single-run product, with only about 500 tools made.

And if Mr. Crunch’s release was any indication, this tool will sell out fast. Here are the details.

Leatherman ‘The Darkside’ Tool

To start, The Darkside packs a wallop of functionality, boasting 23 tools in total. Some mark unique options among the Leatherman tool lineup, including a carbide scribe and a ballpoint pen.

In addition, Leatherman built on the Charge platform by adding an adjustable-tension jaw as well as and tweezers. What’s more, The Darkside marks Leatherman’s first foray into G10 materials laminated in two colors: black and blue. For those unfamiliar with G10, knifemakers commonly use the material for knife handles. It’s widely regarded as an excellent choice.

And The Darkside’s appearance is as much the story as its utility. In addition to the black oxide coloring and striking matte PVD finish, the tool sports striking aqua-blue inlays within the tool body and along the included leather sheath.

Leatherman claims the black DLC coating also reduces friction, making The Darkside noticeably smoother to operate. Perhaps most interestingly, Leatherman notes that the G10 offers up a grippy texture that’s soft to the touch, cool when warm, and warm when cool. Mysterious!
