In the midst of rebranding with a new logo and renewed focus, Leatherman launched a first-of-its-kind magnetized, one-hand-opening line of multitools this week.
Magnets hold the handles of the new Leatherman FREE closed. Pop them apart with your thumb, then flick your wrist to open it like a butterfly knife. Or flick tools open with your thumb. The promise of the new Leatherman FREE line of multitools is fast access coupled with renowned Leatherman quality.
Leatherman launched the FREE line at the SHOT Show in Las Vegas this week. But it won’t be on the shelves until at least April. Our hunt-fish editor Nicole Qualtieri was on-hand to check it out.
Leatherman FREE: Most Intuitive
The Leatherman FREE collection has a “first-of-its-kind magnetic architecture,” according to the brand. The technology integrates magnets into the design, making it easier for users to open, handle, and close the tools. The design also eliminates the need for nail nicks.

“It’s really cool! The magnetic system is amazing, the one-hand opening is super simple once you get the hang of it,” Qualtieri said. “Personally, it’s the most intuitive thing that I’ve handled as far as a multitool goes.”
BladeHQ, a knife sales website, did a slick video on the new product that is worth a watch.
The smooth haptics and opening, plus distinct clicks when locked into place, make this tool look really intriguing.
“Now in 2019, we are reinventing the category Tim invented 35 years ago with the introduction of Leatherman FREE, a collection of tools that will take Leatherman and its users’ experience to the next level,” said Ben Rivera, president and CEO of Leatherman Tool Group.
Leatherman FREE Line Rollout
The Leatherman FREE line will roll out beginning in April 2019 and continuing through August.
First, two styles in the P collection will hit the market in April. The P2 ($120) and P4 ($140) will lead the line with 420 steel pliers-based multipurpose tools. The FREE P2 and P4 tools have many of the same implements found within classic Leatherman tools but with new features and technology.
Next, the FREE T Series will hit the market in June 2019. Two styles within the collection, the T2 ($40) and T4 ($60), will have eight to 10 tools in a convenient, packable size. Leatherman calls these tools “perfect for everyday carry.”
Finally, the FREE K Series will launch in August 2019 with two multipurpose knives. The K2 ($80) and K4 ($90) each carry a 3.35-inch, high-quality 420 steel blade. They add Leatherman FREE design, including epic haptics.
While still months from shelves, we’re already salivating to get our hands on the new Leatherman FREE line of tools. We’ll be cutting, tightening, filing, and fixing our way toward a full review as soon as possible.
