This week, off-grid satellite communications developer Somewear Labs partners with Protect Our Winters to host the Backcountry Giveaway. The initiative looks to benefit POW with up to $5,000 in crowdsourced donations. Winners will receive a wide range of prizes.
The grand prize winner gets a guided backcountry adventure for two from 57Hours plus a Somewear Global Hotspot to help them navigate and transmit messages in the backcountry.
Second- and third-place winners get gear from onX, Teton Gravity Research, and more.
To enter, all you need to do is give each brand partner a follow on Instagram, tag a friend, and donate any amount from $5 on up. Donations close on Saturday, Jan. 29.

Protect Our Winters (POW) is a group of outdoor athletes, scientists, creative professionals, and business leaders dedicated to climate change activism. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit’s headline cause is carbon neutrality, which it aims to approach through policy-level and grassroots channels.
Alpinist Graham Zimmerman is the athlete manager for POW. To him, the group relies on community engagement and what he calls “imperfect advocacy” to impact policy from the ground up. Somewear Labs considers the group’s work vital to its mission.
“We designed our Global Hotspot to enhance the backcountry experience for skiers and riders,” said Jonathan Besquin, Marketing Lead for Somewear Labs. “But it’s hard to support and protect avid backcountry skiers, splitboarders, and mountaineers if winters cease to exist. POW’s work is critical in ensuring that winters and deep snow will be around for future generations.”
