WORLD RECORDS: 2 Marathon Records Broken in 1 Weekend. Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge broke the men’s marathon world record in Austria, becoming the first person in history to break the 2-hour mark. His official time of 1:59:40:2 stands as one of the most insane achievements in the world of running.

And Brigid Kosgei, also of Kenya, shattered the longstanding women’s marathon world record. Her time of 2:14:04 at the Chicago Marathon shaved more than a minute off the previous mark, which had stood for 16 years.

IRONMAN: Roderick Sewell Becomes 1st Double-Amputee Ironman. Roderick Sewell, a member of the U.S. Paralympic swim team, was the first double-amputee to ever get a slot in the Ironman World Championships. This past weekend in Hawaii, he completed the grueling race with a time of 16 hours 26 minutes.

PARALYMPIC TRIALS: 21-Year-Old Becomes 2-Time Champ, Will Represent USA in Tokyo 2020. Daniel Romanchuk defended his first-place title at this year’s Chicago Marathon wheelchair competition. Last year, he set a record as the youngest winner of the Boston Marathon wheelchair division. Winning at the Chicago Marathon this year meant also qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Games.

BEAR ENCOUNTER: Teenage Boy Gets Sniffed by Bear in Mount Rainier National Park. A family hiking at Myrtle Falls in Mt. Rainier National Park got the surprise of their lives when a brown bear emerged out of nowhere and approached the humans. The boy’s sister captured the strange encounter on video. The bear wandered off, and no one was hurt.

BMX FREESTYLE IN 2020 OLYMPICS: 1st Qualifiers Held in Switzerland. Charlotte Worthington and Anthony Jeanjean have made history as the first BMX Freestyle Park European champions. The event had a surprising 48 riders from 13 countries and a huge audience. The freestyle discipline will be a new addition to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

SURF’S UP: American Surfer Carissa Moore Holds 1st Place in Roxy Pro Surf Championship. World Surf League Champion Carissa Moore reinforced her No. 1 ranking with a barrel-rolling win at Roxy Pro France. Winning at this stop makes it her 23rd championship victory of the tour. There are two more contests to go in the world championships.
