RECORD: Runner Breaks 100-Mile World Record on Treadmill. Ultramarathoner Zach Bitter attempted the feat on Saturday, going for not one but two world records. He succeeded in breaking both: the 100-mile treadmill record and the record for most miles ran in 12 hours.
Bitter, who is already the fastest 100-miler on track and trail, set the new record on a NordicTrack X22i Incline Trainer. The event was livestreamed; you can watch it here.
TRADE: The Big Gear Show Finally Postpones. One of the last holdouts in the trade show network was The Big Gear Show, which would’ve held its first industry show this year. Although they’ve canceled, show organizers on confident that the show will (eventually) go on.
“We hope that brands will continue welcoming an alternative show like ours that allows them to meet with their specialty customers for a fraction of the cost of traditional shows,” said show founder Sutton Bacon. Organizers have chosen to reschedule for summer 2021.
RESORT: A-Basin Ski Resort Tears Down Lift, Auctions Off Chairs. Arapahoe Basin Ski Area in Colorado is retiring one of its lifts this year in a unique way: auctioning it off.
Resort fans will be able to bid and purchase chairs from the Pallavicini Lift in an online auction. The first four chairs are open for bidding today, May 18, and all the proceeds will go to a local charity. The remaining chairs will be available for purchase starting June 1.
SAIL: Man Arrives in New Zealand After 3 Months at Sea. One thing’s for sure, Canadian Bill Norrie took on the ultimate form of social distancing: sailing alone. The sexagenarian and his yacht, named Pixie, were just granted entry into New Zealand after months of isolation.
They began their voyage 9 months ago from Victoria, British Columbia, and hadn’t been on land since a supply stop 3 months ago in South Africa. The video captures his re-entry into a new reality after months at sea.
RACES: Amidst Coronavirus, Spartan Races Plan Races for June. While most running, cycling, and fitness races have been canceled for 2020, Spartan Races is one of the few organizations still planning summer events.
Spartan’s CEO Joe De Sena announced new dates for the first 2020 races as well as new policies for events going forward. The first event will take place on June 13-14 in Florida.
