Citing a 'risk of serious injury or death,' YETI issued a global ‘stop sale’ notice for its magnetic soft backpack coolers and dry case.

YETI Holdings, Inc. announced this week that it identified a “potential safety concern” with three products worldwide. In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), YETI stopped the sale of Hopper M20 Soft Backpack Coolers, Hopper M30 Soft Coolers, and SideKick Dry Gear Cases.

The problem: the products’ magnetic closure could fail and “release magnets, posing a risk of serious injury or death if the magnets are ingested.”

YETI said in the filing that it is not aware of any reported injuries as a result of the issue. However, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has verified deaths and serious injuries among children who ingest magnets, which can be poisonous.

“[T]he safety of YETI’s customers and quality of its products are of the utmost importance,” the filing said.

The company notified the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and other global regulatory authorities, and noted it plans to work on “appropriate next steps” with the agencies. YETI will provide additional information on the measure as part of an earnings report scheduled for Feb. 23, the company said.

Official recommendations for owners of affected products remain unclear. YETI had not responded to GearJunkie’s request for comment on Thursday.
