It will take about $20,000. But Nomadas Outdoor Services, the organization that operates the Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race, is hoping to fund a substantial research trip and a population study on the endangered Huemul, an elusive deer — and the national emblem of Chile — that lives in the wilds of Patagonia.
The existence of Huemul, which is rarely sighted, in Chile’s Peninsular Brunswick has been known to the organization because of sightings from race competitors in remote regions during previous WPER races. In collaboration with the University Austral de Chile, Nomadas plans to organize a research trip in March and to “move towards the preservation of this endangered species throughout Chile,” says race founder and director Stjepan Pavicic.
