A tent in the truck bed? Yep, you heard right. That’s just one of the many tricks the 2015 Chevy Colorado has up its sleeve.
Chevy made waves when it brought the midsize Colorado back state-side. In a segment dominated by aging platforms, the 2015 Colorado has been a breath of fresh air and it has got the awards to back it up.
This week, the brand released a new edition of the truck that highlights its “GearOn” bed organization system — aptly named the GearOn Edition.
The truck will ship with basic rails, dividers and gear ties that are the backbone of the GearOn System. Customers can add things such as the bed tent, bike rack or kayak carrier for an additional cost, which can be rolled into financing.
I got a look at the GearOn System while at the North American International Auto Show and it’s really cool. It’s not cheap, but for the price you get a quality, solid set up.
What this system offers over traditional camper shells or racks is that it keeps bed space open and is very flexible, especially with larger items. The fact that it is engineered right into the bed of the truck makes flawless operation likely, although we’ve not yet tested it.
The GearOn edition also has 18” gloss black wheels, off-road assist steps, body color grille and black “bowties” on the front and rear, an EZ Lift and lower tailgate, remote start, front fog lamps, and rear window defogger.
GM will add a 2.8L DuraMax diesel as an available powertrain in 2016 model.
The GearOn Edition starts at $31,250 and will be available this spring. With its space and efficiency (and a reasonable price point), people should really start considering it against some of the castrated SUVs with limited ground clearance and utility.
We hope to put a Colorado through some off-road testing in the future. For now, the GearOn system and all around solid design is worth investigating if you are shopping for a small truck for work and play
