But over the years, technology has served up new possibilities, and our quiver of camp lighting has grown to include everything from flickering faux-candle LED lanterns to colorful string lights. 

Now, our collection of camp lighting is big enough to be slightly embarrassing. But we don’t allow just any old light into our gearbox. BougeRV T1 Portable Telescopic Camping Light: Review

BougeRV markets the T1 as a do-everything “lighting solution” for tents, RVs, emergencies, and outdoor gatherings. And refreshingly, the brand isn’t lying. If anything, its list actually falls a little shy. 

Ours arrived as we were running out the door for a work trip, which involved a hotel stay. We packed it, not thinking we’d actually have a chance to use it. But the room’s lights were annoying bright-white LEDs, so we popped up the T1. With its telescoping action, it did a fine job of lighting up the room with a warm color tone and cheering up the vibe.

Not long after, we embarked on an extended camping trip in the Colorado high country. Since we were meeting up with a few friends and family, and the afternoons are notoriously rainy at 10,000 feet, we set up a 10 x 10 community tent for cooking and hanging out. The T1 served as the floor lamp, standing unassumingly in the corner, while amply illuminating the space. 

The mountains kept calling, and we ended up spending most of the rest of the summer camping. Through the weeks and months, the T1 became an integral and reliable part of our setup.  

Pro-Level Lighting

The sheer number of lighting features on the T1 is borderline ridiculous, but also vastly useful, since those enable it to work in any space. 

Its leading feature is three LED light bars on the top, which move independently and can each tilt 180 degrees and rotate 270 degrees. That means you can direct light up, down, and sideways, all at the same time. That’s exceptionally handy for diverting light so it’s not shining in people’s eyes. It also makes the T1 useful for photography/film and working in awkward areas, like the hull of a boat or under a car.

Then there’s the telescoping neck, which raises the lights to 5.5 feet in the air. That’s enough height to shed light across a more than 30×30-foot area — and more than enough to set up camp after dark, break out the cornhole boards for a moonlight match, or tune up the mountain bikes. Of course, the T1 also works as a table lamp, with sturdy, stable legs, plus has a built-in metal loop for easy hanging. 

Each light bar has three brightness levels (900 lumens, 1,800 lumens, and 3,000 lumens). Furthermore, you can choose to light up one, two, or all three bars in bright white, soft yellow, or red. 

But wait, there’s more! When the light bars are stowed, the main tube illuminates, creating a cozy ambiance through a pattern of rounded holes. The T1 can also double as a flashlight, with an SOS feature.

Compact Quality & Easy Setup

The whole get-up folds up into a compact, sturdy 11.5-inch x 2.7-inch metal tube, which packs well in a travel bag or the back of a car. You can feel the quality instantly when you pick it up. (As a side note, BougeRV’s Portable F01 Fan is also exceptionally well-built.)  

The setup is easy: pull out the T1’s three legs, and then slide the top of the canister upward, which exposes the light bars. After 3 months of testing, and plenty of dirt, we’ve found that the legs still slide out easily and don’t wobble, and the light bars still rotate smoothly and hold their position firmly. 

Pro Tip: To refold it, follow the directions on the side of the tube. It took us a minute to figure out that the light bars actually stow facing outward, which is a bit counterintuitive. 

A few other highlights:

• A large battery, which lasts as long as they claim: 12 nights, with 8 hours a night (one light bar on, at the lowest lumen setting). 
• Three-hour charge time. 
• Color options: black, green, silver, and blue.
• Two-year warranty.
• Threaded metal insert for tripod mounting. 

What Could Be Better?

Surely this thing can’t be perfect, right? I mean, at GearJunkie, we love to point out the flaws in the products we review. So, here’s the doozy — the stakes that come with it, which secure the legs to the ground, are a tad flimsy. 

Seriously, that’s the sole criticism we could come up with. And there’s an easy fix: the holes in the feet are big enough to accommodate regular steel tent stakes, so just pick up a few of those before camping in a windy area. 

Even the slightly lofty price tag ends up feeling worth it, considering the quality.

The one improvement we’d suggest for the next version is adding a place to stow the charging cord. But in the meantime, strapping it to the outside with a rubber band works fine, too.
