Shimano unveils new weapons-grade XTR components – Every new XTR component adds functionality while shedding weight, but no part had more weight reduction than what is perhaps the most exciting addition to the XTR lineup: Shimano’s new carbon tubular wheels.

Available in 29 inch only, the rims themselves are incredibly lightweight at just 280 grams. The rims, quick engagement hubs, and twenty-eight spokes combine for a wheelset weight of just 1,349 grams (front 15-millimeter/ rear 12-millimeter) and 1,298 grams (front 15-millimeter/ rear quick-release). A heavyweight contender for fastest wheels on the planet.

The new XTR side swing derailleur weighs just 100 grams and frees up the area behind the seat tube for better tire and mud clearance. A Di2 electric remains the ultimate front shifter on our wish list though. Given that the new XTR cassette has a relatively limited range, this was the moment we were hoping to see it unveiled.

The cranks, shifters and brakes all looked evil in their new gunmetal black, but are nothing revolutionary. Still, the exotic materials (silicone surface treatments, carbon, magnesium, titanium) that are used throughout these lust-worthy nuggets play a significant part in improving them in both function and on the scale.
