This simple, inexpensive, decidedly non-techy-looking bike helmet has grabbed major attention online.
The Thousand helmet raised more than $182,000 so far on Kickstarter, exceeding its goal of $20,000 by more than 800%.
The urban bike helmet came from a simple idea: make a comfier, more attractive product for people to wear, and more people will wear helmets.
The Thousand looks like an old school motorcycle helmet. Its rounded shape doesn’t have any aero characteristics or sci-fi venting principles that are admittedly an aesthetic turn-off for many casual bikers.
The company says it vents just as well as pro aero helmets, and it won’t look ridiculous paired with a casual shirt and pair of jeans.
A magnetic clasp and a hidden hole that allows you to lock your helmet up along with your bike makes this an attractive option for everyday cyclists.
The lid has clearly has won favor with a lot of people. If making a more stylish and comfortable helmet encourages people to put them on their heads, we can certainly get behind it.
The helmet will retail for $85, which is about on par for other urban helmets on the market. But you can nab one for an early bird price on the company’s Kickstarter page.
