Combining a bivy sack with a vaulted tent space around the head area isn’t entirely unique, but a new Colorado-based company has launched around the concept with two new looks on the “personal shelter.”
The company 5Owls introduced its brand with two designs. One, the Ranger, is a bedroll design that would be appropriate for car camping, horse packing or other situations where space is not at a premium. The second, the Solo Shelter, is small and light enough for backpacking.
I had a chance to meet with Roger Cohen, the founder of 5Owls, on a recent morning at a park in Denver to check out the Solo Shelter ($379) and Ranger Two (offered in two models at $359 and $399).
In my brief examinations, the two models I saw seemed to be well-made first efforts from the new brand.
