Black Diamond released a new ice tool today, the Hydra. As the name suggests, this tool has a modular head that allows the swapping of forged picks, head weights, and hammer configurations. This video explains this I.C.E., or Integrated Component Exchange system.

Black Diamond has many climbing athletes, like Will Gadd and Aaron Mulkey, at its disposal. This video explains how Black Diamond iterated the concept of the Hydra ice tool, made prototypes, gave several versions to the athletes, and reiterated them until everyone was satisfied. This video focuses on the new ice tool, but the process is exercised across all product categories.

The Black Diamond Hydra ice tool was developed over 3 years and involved many engineers and product development experts at Black Diamond. Through CAD drawings, 3D printing, and all forms of testing, these professionals interfaced with athletes to refine the Hydra as it continued to develop over the seasons.

The video showcases this incredibly complex procedure that brings us all wonderful outdoor equipment. It also treats the viewer to stunning footage of ice, mixed, and alpine routes conquered by Black Diamond athletes during the making of the Hydra ice tool.
