Anyone with kids knows the trouble of mittens, boots, and other cold-weather gear. Gloves disappear, boots fall off, and snow gets inside any non-sealed seam.

This winter, I put a new kind of boot on our little boy. The knee-high Muddy Munchkins offer a different design, including uppers made of a waterproof fabric that function much like gaiters.

Fleece bootie inserts add warmth, and a simple rubber bottom serves as the boot body and the outsole in one.

The MyMayu boots cost about $50 a pair and come in sizes for infants and toddlers. They are designed in Canada and made in Mexico.

My boy, who is nearly two-years-old, loves these big, comfortable boots.

They collapse down when not in use, making storage easy. The Muddy Munchkins are lightweight, and they cinch on with cords and locks; no laces to tie make for quick off and on.

The top closes snugly to keep out the snow. While not as warm some other bulky winter boots, I have been putting them on the boy in all temps this winter and they seem sufficient.

Be careful on icy surfaces. The soles have minimal tread and can be slick. However, on crusty or new snow the grip is adequate.

MyMayu, the company that makes the boots, designed them for mud, puddles, and snow. So far I’ve been testing the boots in frozen conditions.

But with a solid rubber shoe base and waterproof uppers I expect the boy to be keeping his tall boots on as we head into the mud season of March and beyond.
