If your finest cooking happens at the side of a campfire or inside a log cabin, the new Benchmade Table Knife Set might be right up your alley.

There’s nothing like a great knife in the campsite. You want one that holds an edge and can do rough tasks in a pinch. But would you consider using a full-size table knife to clean wild game or do other camp chores? Well, the Benchmade Table Set, which launched this month, might change your opinion.

This set of knives takes cues from burly fixed-blade knives, and indeed, while polished enough for the table, there’s no reason these wouldn’t work just fine as a backcountry companion. And at a hefty price, you’ll probably want to use these for more than slicing steaks at home. Here’s what we know so far.

Benchmade Table Knife Set ($600)

Table and kitchen knives from iconic blade manufacturers aren’t exactly new. James Brand just announced a high-end, outdoorsy chef’s knife last week. But Benchmade is about as core as American knife brands come. So when Benchmade approached the ubiquitous kitchen knife, it did so with a heavy-duty flourish.

These are some burly table knives. Benchmade starts with a full-tang CPM-154 steel blade run through G-10 handle scales. This steel has above-average edge retention and corrosion resistance, but it’s reasonably easy to maintain by the average knife sharpener. Indeed, Benchmade even used it in a few of it’s hunting knives and EDC blades.

Handcrafted in Oregon, the blades also have Benchmade’s proprietary SelectEdge technology. We’ve tested this unique sharpening and polishing technology and can attest to its insane sharpness.

The Table Knife Set includes four knives stored in a red birchwood case crafted by custom woodworker H. Arnold Wood Turning. But all this goodness doesn’t come cheap. The four-knife set and case come with a $600 price tag. That’s a big hit for what will likely function mostly as table knives.

However, with that in mind, these knives could certainly stand up to tough use around camp, where they could certainly flex outside kitchen use.

But mostly, these are high-end blades for those who crave a unique, high-quality knife for a camp, lodge, or kitchen setting. These will stand out from the crowd. And if you find yourself skinning your dinner before you get to cook it, this knife should handle both jobs with ease.
