The latest off-road tire from Toyo for trucks and SUVs is looking to fill a gap. The rubber company calls the Open Country R/T Pro a hybrid between the rugged terrain R/T Trail and the beloved Open Country M/T mud-terrain tire. The purpose of the R/T Pro is to deliver a tire that’s more off-road capable than the standard R/T without the on-road sacrifices of the M/T.
If You Can’t Mess With Success, Add a New Option

Why not just replace the Open Country M/T, a classic mud-terrain tire that’s now 20 years old? Well, they don’t want to. Buyers still love its highly aggressive tread pattern and durability when you leave the pavement. And if a truck builder like Ford can build three different off-road trims of just one of its pickups, then Toyo can sure as heck give you a tire that’s also designed to bridge a gap.
In marketing terms, it’s the difference between “rugged terrain A/T” and “maximum traction tire.” Both, of course, are at least one step above all-terrain tires.
Enough about the marketing; what does Toyo deliver? Newer rubber compounds, for a start, along with a new tread pattern. The company says it adds performance and comfort to the off-road segment with less noise than the slightly more aggressive M/T tire.
The R/T Pro gets a three-ply sidewall and huge shoulder lugs to protect from cuts and chips as well as on-trail impacts. R/T tires can be as much about looks as ultimate toughness, but Toyo describes this one as having “professional-grade durability.”

Limited sizes of the new tire will arrive at dealers starting in April. When the full line rolls out, there will be 50 sizes. Fitments include 17-24-inch wheel diameters and there will be up to 42-inch-tall tires available.
