The Denver-based Alterra Mountain Company owns more than 50 worldwide mountain destinations and recently added another to its portfolio. The massive ski corporation announced the addition of Snow Valley Mountain to the Ikon pass and Big Bear Mountain Resort pass. Now, Snow Valley Mountain will operate in partnership with Alterra’s two other Southern California destinations, Bear Mountain and Snow Summit Resorts.
Snow Valley Mountain Resort is one of the oldest continually operating ski resorts in Southern California. It’s also located in the San Bernardino National Forest, just 11 miles from Big Bear Lake. This expansion will make skiing more accessible for people from Pasadena, Santa Monica, Los Angeles, and San Diego.
Additionally, Alterra says it will be investing in improvements to appeal to local winter sports enthusiasts of all skill levels. Between the three resorts, skiers will be able to advance from beginning to intermediate and expert terrain.
“The acquisition of Snow Valley Mountain Resort is a continuation of our ongoing mission to build a premier portfolio of great mountains in robust markets,” said Jared Smith, president and CEO, Alterra Mountain Company. “As we do with all our destinations, we are excited to invest essential capital to enhance the on-site employee and guest experience to further strengthen our offerings to skiers and riders in Southern California.”
About Snow Valley Mountain Resort
In 1924, an aviation designer named Jack Northrop built the first “sling-lift” in the San Bernardino Mountains. He called the area he built it on “Fish Camp.” But it would eventually become known as Snow Valley Mountain Resort — the first in the area, and now, the oldest.
Along with owning that title, Snow Valley Mountain Resort is also one of the largest in Southern California with 240 skiable acres of terrain. There is 1,041 feet of vertical drop that maxes out at a summit of 7,841 feet. It’s a small ski area compared to some of Alterra’s other recent acquisitions. But, as part of Alterra’s Big Bear Mountain Resort Pass, it’s now one of three mountains, all offering unique experiences.
The resort also offers guests access to the only chairlift-serviced sledding area in Southern California. So even non-skiers and boarders can partake in some winter recreation.
Additionally, Snow Valley Mountain is considered to have some of the most versatile skiing in the San Bernardino Mountain area. So, it’s ideal for first-timers and families and for more advanced skiers. The resort also provides a lounge with a full bar, food outlets, shopping, and a ski and snowboard repair shop.
