Nic Cage also appears to descend into madness in the frightening film.

Nic Cage has become a virtual subgenre in modern film, bringing his manic overacting to seemingly every possible setting, from vampires to wizards to convicts on an airplane.

Now, Cage will play an antihero representing the brutality of the American West in a new film set in Colorado and filmed in Montana. “Butcher’s Crossing,” a “19th-century frontier adventure,” according to a press release, is based on a book by former University of Denver assistant professor John Edward Williams.

Based on the trailer, its style is reminiscent of “The Revenant,” but with fewer bears, more buffalo, and Cage playing a villain who leads a small team of men on a journey into the Colorado wilderness.

After premiering in film festivals last year, “Butcher’s Crossing” comes to theaters on October 20. So, if Western-themed horror sounds like your cup of whiskey, this might be the perfect flick for this Halloween.
