[leadin]Four feet of snow in Colorado mountains! Huge powder forecast! Let the fun begin![/leadin]
Those kinds of headlines have dominated Colorado area ski news for the past week, as a major spring storm, awesomely named Vexo, takes aim at the region. And while the forecasts still seem to be correct, with heavy snow falling this afternoon across the high mountains in Colorado and rain changing to snow along the front range, I-70 had already closed shortly after 5 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
According to COTrip.org, which monitors conditions on I-70, the artery to the mountains closed before most front range skiers had even clocked out of work on Friday afternoon.
“Safety closure. No estimated time to open,” reported the Colorado Department of Transportation. The closure was for I-70 Westbound Georgetown to Eisenhower Tunnel beginning at 4 p.m.
I-70 Eastbound closed at East Vail at around 2 p.m.
The CODOT will be working overtime this weekend with many front range skiers hoping to hit the mountains for one last powder day before summer. If you’re heading to the Colorado slopes this weekend, be sure to have snow tires, four wheel drive, and chains as required for the state’s Traction Law, and pack lots of patience. Looks like the roads are poised for a slow travel weekend.
