Wolverine Sentinel Hiking Boot — A rare made-in-the-USA entry, this model gets some influence from the work-boot world. But hiking is its main pursuit, and the Sentinel has waterproof leather uppers with a Gore-Tex lining. A higher ankle keeps out the debris. On the foot, its sole is more flexible than it looks.

Knobby rubber tread stomps toothy footprints in the mud. Downsides? It’s the heaviest and among the most expensive boot in this review.

Weight: 31 oz. (per boot, men’s size 12); MSRP: $302; On sale for $239; More info/buy now
