SUMMIT: NFL Player Mark Pattison Reaches Seven Summits. Former NFL player Mark Pattison has become the first NFL player to reach the top of the world’s Seven Summits. Pattison finished his bid on May 23 when he reached the top of Mt. Everest. Read his direct account via Facebook.
JOIN: Black Birders Week Kicks Off May 30-June 5. BlackAFinSTEM Collective has announced that its second annual #BlackBirdersWeek will run through Saturday, June 5, 2021. “[We] aim to inspire new audiences to engage in nature and share the stories of Black conservationists from across the country,” it wrote.
This year, the collective has partnered with The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Bird Collective, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Tucson Audubon Society, and more for birding events, live-streamed panels, and activities. Join here.
NO O2: Kilian Jornet, David Goettler Turn Back From Everest in No O2 Summit Push. Kilian Jornet, along with climber David Goettler, have both turned around on Mt. Everest, despite hoping to reach the summit without supplemental oxygen.
The first record of a summit without supplemental oxygen was in 1978, and the first American woman completed the feat without O2 in 2016. There have been no successful summits without supplemental O2 this season.
OUTDOOR ED: Bass Pro, Cabela’s Pledge $50K to Outdoors Tomorrow Foundation to Get More Kids Outside. Bass Pro and Cabela’s $50,000 commitment will make the angler education curriculum of Outdoors Tomorrow Foundation’s (OTF) Outdoor Adventures program available to more schools and youth across the nation.
“Angler education is one of the most popular units in the program,” said OTF Director Sean McLelland. “This partnership with Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s Outdoor Fund plays a vital role in helping OTF reach 63,000 students in 42 states with vital outdoor education.”
