There’s something fun about skiing in a onesie. It’s cozy, a little ridiculous in the best way, and legitimately capable as a cold-weather base layer. The Smartwool Women’s Classic Thermal Merino Base Layer One Piece leans into that vibe. The design combines Smartwool’s classic 250g merino fabric with an all-in-one design that’s equal parts practical and playful.
The concept is simple. Instead of a base layer top and bottom, the Classic Thermal One Piece connects everything into one continuous layer of 100% merino wool. That design eliminates the small gaps where cold air sneaks in between layers. It keeps the fabric moving as a single piece when you’re skiing or generally moving around.
Of course, wearing a onesie comes with some quirks. Namely: peeing. But overall, this onesie is equal parts fun and technical. That’s true, especially if you’re the sort of gal who likes the idea of a catsuit.
In short: The Smartwool Women’s Classic Thermal Merino Base Layer One Piece ($250) delivers the warmth and odor resistance of a classic merino base layer in a one-piece design. This piece minimizes cold gaps and keeps you cozy. It’s warm, soft, and surprisingly comfortable to wear on the slopes.

Smartwool Women’s Classic Thermal Merino Base Layer One Piece Review

As you’re likely aware, Smartwool has been making merino wool layers for outdoor athletes for decades. The brand has built a reputation around comfortable, durable wool pieces that perform in cold conditions. In particular, the Classic Thermal line sits at the warmer end of the spectrum, using midweight 250g merino wool to keep skiers, boarders, and winter hikers cozy while outside.
I tested the onesie during a handful of ski days at Aspen Highlands in Aspen, Colo., along with plenty of wear during the après scene afterward (because once you’re in a merino onesie, it’s hard to take it off).
Warmer Than Expected

On paper, the Smartwool Classic Thermal One Piece is a 250g merino base layer. Midweight wool usually falls in the 200-300g range, while heavyweight wool typically is 300g or more. So in theory, this onesie is squarely in the midweight category. But in practice, it felt slightly warmer than a typical two-piece set.
Part of that warmth likely comes from the design itself. Because the top and bottom are connected, I noticed fewer opportunities for cold air to sneak in between layers or for warm air to escape.
One of my least favorite things is when you bend over to tweak your boots and feel that cold air creep up your back as your top rises. It’s a little thing, but we all know what I’m talking about. With the onesie, that gap simply doesn’t exist — and I think that makes it a tick warmer than the stats suggest.
I wore the piece during four ski days at Aspen Highlands and Snowmass Ski Resort, with the lowest temperatures dipping into the high teens (Fahrenheit). Under a shell jacket and bibs with a moderate midlayer, the onesie provided more than enough warmth to keep me cozy, even on the chairlift. In fact, on one milder afternoon (low-30s Fahrenheit), I found myself skiing comfortably in just the onesie and shell.
Of course, merino wool’s natural temperature regulation helped, too. The fabric wicked sweat well during sustained skiing, and it never felt clammy during lift rides. And, odor resistance was excellent, even after multiple wears. (Because no, I didn’t wash it for all four of my testing days.)
This isn’t surprising, since wool is known to regulate temperatures quite well. But still, it’s good to confirm when you’re going to shell out cash for new gear.
Slim Fit and Great Mobility

Comfort is where I was initially suspicious. I’m the sort that doesn’t care how cute something is; if it doesn’t move well with my body, it’s getting tossed to the curb. And a single garment covering your entire torso and legs sounded like it might pull in some areas or gap in others, or generally make me miserable when I’m supposed to be having fun.
Good news: that wasn’t the case.
The fabric itself has the soft, slightly stretchy hand you’d expect from high-quality merino wool. Smartwool uses a 100% merino interlock knit that feels smooth against the skin. It’s not itchy, either, avoiding the stereotype that continues to prevail about wool.
Fit-wise, the onesie runs slimmer than I expected. I’m 5’5″ and about 145 pounds with wider hips, strong quads, and broad shoulders. I typically wear a medium in most base layers, and the medium in the Smartwool One Piece fit well. But, it definitely fit with a sleeker, body-hugging silhouette. I’ve taken to calling it my catsuit, which I kind of love.
At first, I assumed I’d want a looser fit in something like this, but I grew to love the slimmer design. The fabric easily moved with my body and didn’t bunch under bibs or ski pants. There was no extra material twisting around my knees or hips when I skied bumps or made quick turns. It sounds clichéd to say it, but the Smartwool onesie just … disappears when you put it on.
Length-wise, the suit worked well for my height. It wasn’t overly long, but there was enough extra room that it didn’t feel tight when reaching overhead or bending down. I would be curious how the sizing translates for taller women, since I’m just slightly below average height.
The Reality of Bathroom Breaks

Remember how I said the onesie disappears while wearing it? That’s true, but the feeling only lasts until you have to pee.
The star of the show is the drop-seat design. Instead of a single horizontal zipper or a flap that pulls aside, Smartwool uses two curved zippers that start in the middle of the lower back and arc downward toward each leg. When unzipped, the opening forms something like an upside-down smile — or, depending on your perspective, the perfect shape for dealing with a full moon situation.
In practice, the design works really well. The fabric falls away, making bathroom breaks easier than expected for a full-body base layer. However, things get more complicated when you’re wearing ski bibs with their own drop-seat system.
During ski days, I discovered that navigating the onesie’s drop seat plus the drop seat on my GORE-TEX bibs required a fair amount of fabric juggling. Between lifting a ski jacket, managing two sets of zippers, and keeping everything out of the way, the process became more complicated than it should have been for a quick pee break. I honestly can’t imagine navigating all of that while peeing outside.
I did fully appreciate the front zipper, though. It runs from the mock collar down past the belly button, making it easy to step into the suit and pull it up over your shoulders without any acrobatics.
Final Thoughts

The Smartwool Women’s Classic Thermal Merino Base Layer One Piece has a split personality: part serious merino base layer, part adult onesie that makes you giggle.
It delivers the same warmth, odor resistance, and softness that Smartwool’s merino base layers are known for, while the one-piece design adds a subtle warmth advantage by eliminating cold gaps between layers. The slim fit moves well under ski gear, and the soft merino fabric makes it comfortable enough to wear long after the day’s skiing ends. (And, it’s cute!)
But, the onesie format isn’t for everyone. If you prefer the flexibility of mixing and matching tops and bottoms, or don’t feel like wrangling bathroom logistics, you may want to look elsewhere.
But if you’re open to the idea of a merino base layer that’s equal parts functional and catsuit, the Smartwool One Piece is a sleek, useful layer to add to your kit.
