A Word from Matt Bento
I don’t like to buy gear all the time, so I put a ton of research into what I’m looking for, followed by an unreasonable amount of bargain hunting. I’ve had the same Rab Xenon insulated jacket for 8 years, the same TNF hardshell for 6, and the same cams on my rack for almost 20. Needless to say, I’ve read a lot of gear reviews, and I’m well aware of the key decision points and when a review is missing them. Through methodical evaluation, I can tell what gear is going to last and what will have me going back to the drawing board next season.
I’m lucky to be able to turn my compulsions into a career that allows me to work with a talented team of writers, outdoor enthusiasts, and gear testers while getting to live in the Eastern Sierra and play in my endless backyard. There’s always another peak to climb or another drainage to explore out here, and yes, plenty of gear gets thrashed in the process.
