AT Overland’s new Aterra ASI camper sets a fresh standard in versatility, blending ultra-lightweight construction with innovative modularity. Available both as a DIY-ready shell and a fully equipped model, this slide-in camper caters to every kind of adventurer — from passionate DIY builders to turnkey explorers seeking premium features straight from the factory.

AT Overland has earned a strong reputation by crafting rugged, functional, and innovative campers designed specifically for adventure travelers. The company’s latest release, the Aterra Slide-In (ASI), continues this legacy — delivering modular versatility, lightweight durability, and serious off-road capability in the competitive slide-in camper market.

As the newest member of AT Overland’s Aterra series, the ASI represents a significant evolution in slide-in camper design. It’s a fully enclosed, hard-sided slide-in unit built from advanced honeycomb composite materials. It’s ideal for truck campers who prioritize adaptability, ease of use, and durability in demanding off-road conditions.

Lightweight & Durable Construction

The ASI’s appeal begins with its innovative and lightweight construction. The camper utilizes an advanced honeycomb composite structure, reinforced by a polygonal geometry, and coated inside and out with UV-stable hybrid polyurea and polyurethane.

This construction technique provides outstanding durability against extreme weather and rugged terrain, while significantly reducing camper weight compared to traditional builds.

For those looking to build a rugged, hard-sided camper that’s paired with a mid-sized or half-ton full-size pick-up, the DIY-ready shell starts at an impressively low 757 pounds, making it extremely attractive for those with limited payload capacity. Even the more fully featured Standard model tips the scales at just 817 pounds, ensuring flexibility for extended, off-grid adventures.

I had the opportunity to take a look at a fully equipped ASI camper at AT Overland’s headquarters in Prescott, Ariz. It was mounted in a 6.5-foot-bed Toyota Tundra.

And, equipped with optional amenities such as a forced air heater, air conditioner, water system, shower, fridge/freezer, toilet, and storage compartments, it weighed in at a reasonable 1,157 pounds. Its aerodynamic design and rigid structural geometry ensure minimal strain on your truck, whether driving highways or tackling rough off-road trails.

DIY Shell vs. Fully Equipped Camper

Perhaps the most compelling feature of the Aterra Slide-In is its ability to cater seamlessly to two distinct audiences: passionate DIY builders and those looking for a complete, turnkey solution.

However, Mario Donovan, AT Overland CEO, was quick to emphasize that the fully equipped Standard model, priced at $31,995, offers undeniably better value. For roughly $2,000 more, the Standard model comes factory-fitted with high-end components, including a Redarc Manager 30 power management system, a Lion Energy 105Ah lithium battery, and 185 W of roof-mounted Sol-Go solar panels.

Considering the cost and complexity of sourcing and installing these premium components separately, the Standard model stands out as an attractive choice for most buyers.

Still, for those who insist on a ground-up build, AT Overland’s DIY shell — complete with expert guidance — is a refreshingly supportive option. As Donovan explained, “Customers can give us a call and choose from a variety of pre-built modules ready to bolt into their camper. They can start with something basic and then build it out as their budget or needs change.”

Thoughtful Interior Design & Premium Features

Inside the Standard model, AT Overland’s meticulous design philosophy is evident. The spacious cabover bed measures 74 inches by 80 inches and has a 3-inch-thick mattress with a durable Sunbrella fabric cover. So, it doesn’t interfere with your living space, the bed folds out by way of an interesting collapsible structure. And if you wanted, you could just leave the bed stashed and sleep east-west in a smaller bed.

Dimmable LED interior lights and a welcoming exterior porch light offer practical illumination without sacrificing ambiance.

The interior emphasizes efficient use of space. A forward power cabinet (expandable to carry up to two Dakota Lithium 320Ah batteries) provides both electronics storage and cushioned seating.

Folding wall-mounted tables at counter height offer essential food prep and dining areas without crowding the interior. High-quality double-pane windows provide thermal efficiency, complemented by reflective privacy blinds and insect screens.

Every ASI camper also comes standard with a fire extinguisher, carbon monoxide and smoke detectors, a My Medic first-aid kit, and a rugged Fenix flashlight, showcasing AT Overland’s thorough approach.

Extensive Options for Personalization

The AT Aterra Slide-In camper truly excels in its extensive customization potential. Designed intentionally to evolve with owners’ adventures, AT Overland offers a wide array of practical upgrades catering to diverse travel styles.

“We built the Aterra for travelers who wanted a lightweight, durable, and modular camper that could be easily modified and upgraded,” said Donovan.

For outdoor cooking enthusiasts, modular kitchen setups include durable bamboo countertops, ample storage cabinets, fridge/freezer mounts for premium units like the National Luna 50L, and portable stoves suitable for indoor and outdoor cooking. Efficient off-grid water management is addressed through optional stainless steel sinks with powered faucets, paired with a convenient 12-gallon freshwater tank.

External shower options include the Joolca hot-water system and quickly deployable shower enclosures. These ensure comfort without complex installations.

Climate comfort is equally customizable. Travelers can select from powerful solutions like the Truma Varioheat forced-air heating system for colder adventures or the roof-mounted Nomadic X2 air conditioner for hot-weather expeditions.

Storage-conscious campers will appreciate modular compartments designed to hold up to 15 Step 22 Stingray Flat Boxes, along with MOLLE panels to further enhance gear organization.

Extended adventures are supported by flexible toilet options — such as the eco-friendly Trobolo composting toilet or Wrappon sealing toilet — to optimize space and convenience during extended off-grid trips. Recognizing the needs of digital nomads, AT Overland also offers a standard rooftop DC port, perfectly suited for installing a Starlink Mini satellite internet system, ensuring reliable connectivity in remote locations.

The fully optioned model I toured at AT Overland’s facility showcased many of these available upgrades — including forced-air heating, comprehensive water system, National Luna fridge/freezer, composting toilet, extensive storage compartments, and upgraded seating. With a price of around $45,000, it demonstrated clearly just how versatile and well-appointed the ASI can be, fully tailored to individual travel aspirations.

Built for Genuine Off-Road Adventure

AT Overland’s unwavering commtment to off-road performance is embedded in the Aterra Slide-In’s design. The camper features an advanced self-aligning, bolt-in attachment system. And, unlike conventional campers that require cumbersome turnbuckles or straps, the ASI’s design simplifies attachment and removal while providing an extremely secure connection, ideally suited for challenging off-road travel.

Its low weight, robust composite construction, and straightforward attachment method significantly enhance vehicle handling, stability, and safety, particularly when navigating technical terrain, steep climbs, or narrow trails.

Potentially overlooked is the polygon design shape, which not only provides an aerodynamic silhouette, but also increases clearance along the top corners of the camper which are most likely to get damaged by low-hanging trees.

The modular philosophy behind the ASI makes it adaptable to evolving lifestyles, accommodating growing families, shifting travel priorities, or continuous customization efforts. Factory-backed support ensures DIY adventurers always have expert guidance, making the camper a sound investment for long-term ownership.

AT Overland Aterra Slide-In: Availability & Pricing

Initially, the ASI is available for full-size trucks with bed lengths of 5.5, 6.5, 6.75, and 8 feet. Acknowledging the popularity among mid-size truck owners, AT Overland announced models specifically tailored for 5- and 6-foot beds arriving in 2026.

Attractively priced just under $30,000 for the DIY shell and starting at $31,995 for the Standard model, the ASI occupies an appealing niche — delivering high-quality construction, innovative design, and versatile modularity at a reasonable entry point.
