Overlanding nuts, take a peek at (or maybe bid on?) this heavily modified 1991 Mercedes-Benz Unimog U1550L.
If you’ve been thirsty for a refurbished, modified Unimog from the early 90s, now might be your chance. Bringatrailer.com has a 1991 Mercedes-Benz Unimog U1550L up for auction right now, and it has all the trimmings.
Overland Unimog: Ready for Adventure
The 6.0L turbodiesel inline-six will get you where you need to go, especially when paired with an eight-speed manual transmission and Class overdrive unit. A Superwinch Talon on the front will help haul you or anyone else out of jams, and two 50-gallon fuel tanks should get you out of the woods. You can stay hydrated (or buzzed) thanks to an Engel slide-out refrigerator while you study the terrain.
Go ahead and drive this baby out into the desert — with roof-mounted air conditioning units, the heat shouldn’t be an issue.
And for those long nights out in the wild, deploy the custom AT Overland Habitat rooftop tent.
What about agua? There’s a 36-gallon water tank hooked up to a Flojet water pump that feeds appliances like an Elgena Nautic 6L water heater to keep you cozy and a stainless steel Osculati shower to keep you fresh.
And speaking of fresh — the gray paint job is new as of 2022.
The rig sits atop 20-inch wheels mounted with 365/80 Continental MPT 81 tires. And just in case you run into trouble, there’s a spare tire mounted to the fold-down rear ladder. Four-wheel disc brakes and a switch-controlled tire inflation system round out the wheel-related swag.
Overland Unimog: Interior Details
Check these scheel-mann Vario F front captains chairs. Our Motors Editor, Bryon Dorr, has them in his custom GX460 and swears by them.
The rest of the interior up front is utilitarian. It includes a ceiling-mounted rearview screen, USB ports, in-dash AC, and a CB radio.
The rear cabin sports tons of mods, including bucket seats that recline and swivel, an Espar Airtronic heater, an inward-facing bench that transitions into a bed, four storage drawers, and a Wrappon toilet.
Adventure Up for Auction: Mileage Unknown
One thing to keep in mind: a Sept. 2016 Carfax report notes a mileage inconsistency. While the digital odometer reads 20,000 miles, Bring a Trailer mentions that the “total mileage is unknown.”
If you want to throw down some more on top of whatever this modded-out Unimog has already done, check it out at bringatrailer.com. As of this writing, the current bid is $151,000. Bidding ends tomorrow, Dec. 1.
