Dates & Details: Nov. 11-21, 2022
From Nov. 11 through 21, you can shop in-store or online at REI.com and save up to 50% on products from brands like The North Face, Smartwool, REI Co-op, Osprey, Smith, and many more. In addition, each member receives two 20%-off coupons: One provides a discount on a full-priced item and the other can be used at the REI Outlet (online only) with the code GEARUP22.
Below we outline some of our top picks for on-sale gear, including ski apparel and accessories, insulation, hiking footwear, and even snowshoes and winter traction devices.
Shop the REI Gear Up Get Out SaleOur Favorite ‘Gear Up Get Out’ Deals
The North Face ThermoBall Triclimate Jacket — Men’s & Women’s: 25% Off
Ski jackets are a pricey bunch. For resort skiers looking to save, turning to a 3-in-1 jacket is a compromise: With a single purchase, you get both a waterproof shell and an insulating midlayer that can be zipped in on cold days or left at home in spring conditions (you can also wear the insulated jacket on its own around town).
While far from the cheapest option available, The North Face’s ThermoBall Eco Snow Triclimate is our favorite 3-in-1 design this season.
The jacket has a nice fit, offers decent exterior storage, and includes upgrades like pit zips and water-resistant zippers. And for insulation, you get the brand’s ThermoBall Eco zip-out jacket ($199 on its own), which does a pretty good impression of lofty down and continues to insulate when wet.
Smith I/O Mag ChromaPop Goggles: 20% Off
Smith dominates the snow goggle market, with good reason. Its I/O Mag ChromaPop technology offers HD-like color quality that translates to fantastic on-slope clarity in a wide range of conditions, while the magnetic quick-change system allows it to swap between lenses depending on lighting (the I/O Mag comes with two).
Rounding out the design, you get an expansive field of view, comfortable fit, and excellent ventilation according to the brand. For an even wider field of vision, Smith’s own 4D Mag (also discounted, from $320 to $256) has a curved lens at the bottom to increase visibility. Finally, it’s worth noting that Smith’s helmets are also 20% off during the sale, including their Vantage MIPS.
Shop NowCotopaxi Fuego Down Jacket — Men’s & Women’s: 25% Off
You can get a lot of use out of a quality down jacket, whether you plan to wear it casually or on dedicated backcountry adventures. And Cotopaxi’s signature Fuego Hooded Down Jacket is a versatile option. What immediately stands out is the fun, retro styling with vibrant stripes across the chest, but there’s more to the Fuego than meets the eye:
The jacket is built with 800-fill down and an outer shell, and it’s versatile enough for wearing from trail to town according to the brand. For an alternate midlayer option with added wet-weather assurance, Cotopaxi’s synthetic Teca Calido is also available for 25% off through Nov. 21 and shares the same vibrant styling as the Fuego collection.
Danner Trail 2650 Hiking Shoes — Men’s & Women’s: 25% Off
A quality pair of hiking shoes can make a world of difference in terms of on-trail performance and comfort, and Danner’s Trail 2650 is one of those options. With a Vibram outsole, it weighs in at 1 pound 8 ounces per pair (for the men’s version). The leather upper ensures durability and offers a foot-hugging feel, while the mesh liner and textile collar add a nice dose of breathability according to the brand.
Note: We include the non-waterproof, low-top Trail 2650 here, but the waterproof and mid-height boot variations are also 25% off. And if you’re looking for a winter boot, Danner’s Weatherized Mountain 600 (Men’s & Women’s), Arctic 600 (Men’s & Women’s), Jag Dry (Men’s & Women’s), and Cloud Cap (Men’s & Women’s) are also discounted.
Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket: 25% Off
Car camping is all about maximizing comfort, and a quality camping blanket can go a long way toward keeping you warm and cozy outdoors. Among the growing number of options on the market, Rumpl’s Original Puffy Blanket offers three-season use with synthetic insulation, features a hardwearing shell and water-repellent coating to fend off light precipitation, and comes in a wide selection of vibrant patterns and color schemes (including a fun new “Artist Series” collection).
The Original Puffy’s corner loops and Cape Clip also allow you to secure the blanket around your torso to go hands-free. Note: Rumpl’s lighter NanoLoft and Down Puffy models are also discounted during the sale.
Shop NowYakima SkyBox 16 Carbonite Roof Box: 20% Off
Yakima’s SkyBox is one of the most ubiquitous rooftop cargo boxes on the market. One big reason is the SkyBox’s manageable size, which fits most vehicles but retains ample capacity for skis and bulky camping equipment. It’s also very user-friendly with access points by both the driver and passenger sides and tool-free setup and removal.
Finally, the aerodynamic shape that tapers at the rear is made to minimize road noise and the impact on gas mileage, which is a common concern for many first-time buyers.
Shop NowGCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker Chair: 50% Off
As its name suggests, GCI Outdoor’s Freestyle Rocker calling card is its rocking functionality, which GCI achieves with a spring-action “tube” at the back that allows the metal frame to move up and down as you push off the ground. It is built to offer stability despite its rocking abilities.
And when you’re ready to pack up, the Freestyle Rocker can fold down in one motion with its attached carrying handle — no need to stuff it into a tote on the way out. If you’re looking for a more traditional design, YETI’s top-end Trailhead and REI’s Outward Low Lawn Chair are also 50% off.
Shop NowREI Co-op First Chair GTX Jacket — Men’s & Women’s: 30% Off
The North Face’s ThermoBall Eco Snow Triclimate above is a great option for those who want a waterproof shell and insulating midlayer in one, but many skiers prefer the versatility of separating their jackets and midlayers. For resort skiers looking for a more breathable and streamlined option, REI’s First Chair GTX is an option equipped with GORE-TEX.
For $299 full MSRP and $210 during the sale, the First Chair features a powder skirt, pit zips, and seven pockets. To complete your kit, the First Chair GTX Bib Snow Pants are also 30% off through Nov. 21.
And for those who run cold, REI’s Powderbound Insulated Jacket uses in-house waterproofing rather than GORE-TEX but also features synthetic insulation (80 g around the core and 60 g in the sleeves).
Osprey Men’s Aether 65 & Women’s Ariel 65 Backpacks: 25% Off
Osprey has earned a reputation in the backpacking world over the years, and its Aether 65 and women’s Ariel 65 packs might be familiar to outdoor enthusiasts. Purpose-built for heavy hauling, these packs feature firm but supportive padding, robust fabrics, and organization options that include a J-shaped zipper along the front for accessing the main compartment and hipbelt pockets large enough to swallow a plus-sized smartphone.
These bags are also adjustable with their rip-and-stick Velcro design that allows you to move the shoulder strap and hipbelt padding to where it’s most supportive and comfortable for you.
Smartwool Classic Thermal 1/4 Zip — Men’s & Women’s: 25% Off
Made with 100% merino (many base layers are blends or synthetics), the Classic Thermal 1/4 Zip is made to be warm, soft against the skin, and resists moisture and stink, unlike polyester alternatives. You can take this base layer skiing and in other wintersports, and it has a UPF 50+ rating for use as an outer layer in milder weather.
Based on the popularity of the Smartwool Classic Thermal, it’s also offered in a standard crew top (men’s and women’s) and hoodie (men’s and women’s) (also 25% off during the sale).
Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Elite Child Carrier: 25% Off
For hitting the trail with a little one in tow, baby carrier packs are made to carry the load (child and gear) with you. Kelty’s Journey PerfectFIT Elite is offered in base and midrange options (both of which are also 25% off through Nov. 21).
The namesake suspension system allows you to quickly dial in the fit by pulling on two straps at the back panel. And the carrier has multiple grab handles and pockets (including a separate compartment for dirty clothes and gear), an integrated sunshade, and a wide seat with adjustable stirrups and a removable drool pad.
It’s a sizable investment at $340 MSRP, but buying during the sale will save you $85.
Shop NowMountain Hardwear Bishop Pass 15 Sleeping Bag — Men’s & Women’s: 25% Off
Mountain Hardwear’s Bishop Pass is made for backpacking and lightweight adventures. The 15-degree (Fahrenheit) version here offers three-season warmth with a 26-degree F ISO comfort rating (the women’s model has a 15-degree comfort rating), a body-hugging mummy shape, and a draft collar with an adjustable face gasket to seal in heat.
Mountain Hardwear also offers a less-expensive 30-degree F variation that’s on sale for $176, as well as 15- and zero-degree F models with GORE-TEX INFINIUM shells designed for added water resistance and windproofing.
Outdoor Research Prevail Heated GORE-TEX Mitts: 25% Off
If you struggle with persistently cold hands or simply want to maximize warmth, a heated glove or mitten can help. Outdoor Research makes the Prevail Heated GTX Mitts (also available in a glove style) with its ALTIHeat system.
With the touch of a button on the gauntlet, it triggers the battery-powered heating element to deliver warmth throughout your hand and fingers. You can cycle through three heat settings (low, medium, and high) depending on conditions and personal needs. And in between uses, you can replenish the OR’s lithium-ion battery with the included wall charger (extra sets are also available for $25).
The Prevail Mitts and Gloves are an investment at $329 MSRP, but the $247 sale price makes them more approachable. For those who don’t need the heated tech, OR’s Carbide Sensor Mitts are $86 during the sale.
Shop NowFjallraven Kiruna Padded Insulated Parka — Women’s: 25% Off
Like many of Fjallraven’s more technical pieces, the Kiruna Padded Insulated Parka utilizes the brand’s signature G-1000 fabric that’s made to be tough and weather-resistant.
Along with 80g synthetic insulation in the body and 60g in the sleeves, the Kiruna provides winter-ready warmth even in damp conditions. And despite the warm build, the Kiruna weighs in at 1 pound 15 ounces. It has chic Scandinavian styling, low-profile pockets, and adjustment points at the hood, waist, and sleeves.
On the men’s side, the Skogso Padded Insulated Jacket uses a similar material mix, including the same G-1000 fabric with more insulation (145g in the body and 125g in the sleeves) for around $274 during the sale.
Shop NowREI Co-op Rainier Rain Jacket — Men’s & Women’s: 30% Off
REI continues to expand and improve its in-house outerwear collection, and the Rainier is one option. This rain shell uses a 2.5-layer construction with sealed seams, and it has pit zips and a three-piece hood with dual adjustments.
REI offers a healthy selection of color options and available sizes with this one, which should make it easy for most to find a great fit. (Note: Sizing does run fairly large.)
For a more performance-focused option with premium GORE-TEX waterproofing, REI’s XeroDry GTX Jacket is also 30% off through Nov. 21.
Atlas Helium Trail Snowshoes: 20% Off
With a long platform for flotation and added traction underfoot, snowshoes open up your favorite terrain for all kinds of winter fun. Options range from recreational models for moderate trails to more powder-ready backcountry designs for tackling steeper and more challenging terrain.
The Atlas Helium Trail falls into the former category, offering well-rounded performance for most recreational users. With a healthy number of “gills” in the frame, the Helium checks in at 3 pounds 7 ounces for the 26-inch version while offering traction and a heel lift for big ascents. Atlas also improved the bindings during a recent update with a new Wrapp Stretch design that’s flexible and easy to adjust while locking in your foot.
If you’re looking for something a little different, all snowshoes from Atlas, Tubbs, Crescent Moon, and Yukon Charlie’s are 20% off at REI through Nov. 21.
Shop NowBlack Diamond Storm 500-R Headlamp: 25% Off
Black Diamond offers a headlamp for nearly every type of activity and budget, from the Astro 300 to the Icon 700. The Storm 500-R sits at the upper end of the lineup, offering brightness and battery life in a relatively light and streamlined package.
At max output, the 500-lumen beam stretches almost 400 feet for visibility on dark trails, and the top button makes it quick and easy to adjust brightness and switch between modes (settings include multiple proximity and distance modes, dimming and strobe functions, and red, green, and blue night vision).
Black Diamond also tacked on a powerful 2,400mAh lithium-ion battery in the latest update, which lasts up to 350 hours on low (7 hours on high) and can recharge via the micro-USB port at the side.
Note: All BD lighting is 25% off during the Gear Up Get Out sale, including the brand’s popular Moji camping lantern collection.
Shop NowBOGS Classic High Rain Boots — Men’s & Women’s: 25% Off
BOGS’ Classic High Rain Boots (for men and women) have the signature look of a rain boot but with 7mm-thick neoprene construction for insulation and protection for cold-weather use, according to the brand.
The BOGS’ low profile also makes them suited for daily wear — as does the flexible neoprene upper material. It’s a classic choice everywhere from coastal cities to frigid rural areas in the Midwest (the rain boot-like aesthetic isn’t out of place in the shoulder seasons, either).
Kahtoola MICROspikes: 20% Off
Winter traction devices — aka microspikes, ice cleats, and snow grips (among other designations) — stretch across the sole of your shoe or boot and are designed to provide added grip on slick winter surfaces like ice or snow.
Kahtoola’s MICROspikes have 12 stainless steel spikes that are moderately deep, burly enough to withstand regular use and abuse, and offer traction on steep and icy terrain. And despite a fairly middling weight of just under 12 ounces per pair, the MICROspikes pack away quite small and easily disappear into a daypack.
The crampon-like build is overkill for daily wear (Kahtoola’s EXOspikes are less aggressive and also 20% off), but the MICROspikes are hard to beat for frequent trail use.
Shop NowGarmin inReach Mini 2: $50 Off
For reliably staying in touch on far-off adventures in the mountains or across the world, we turn to satellite messenger devices, like Garmin’s inReach Mini 2.
Don’t be fooled by the diminutive size: This device has texting capabilities, weather forecasting, navigation and tracking functionality, a battery life of up to 14 days, and a last-resort SOS feature to coordinate a rescue in the event of an emergency.
These devices don’t come cheap and require an active subscription for use, but it’s hard to put a price on having a dependable safety net.
