Tough Decision: 2024 Land Rover Defender 130 Outbound Package or V8 (But Not Both)

Land Rover listened to its customers, offering a V8 and more adventure-oriented Defender 130 in 2024. Sadly, though, you can't get the V8 in the D130 Outbound.

Land Rover is filling out its line of Defender models with powertrains and layouts that customers want. New for 2024 is a Defender 110 Country package that offers a retro look, a Defender 130 Outbound package that is perfect for adventure travel, and finally a Defender 130 with a V8.

Sadly, you can’t get the Outbound package and V8 together in a 2024 Defender 130 (D130). Also, the V8 on offer in the D130 is 25 horsepower shy of the one that launched in the D110 V8 model.

Let’s dive into what’s new for the 2024 Land Rover Defender Lineup.

For 2024, the D130 finally gets a V8 powerplant. Under the bonnet will be a 5.0L supercharged V8, putting out 493 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. Land Rover says it’s good for a 5.4-second 0-60 mph pull.

The 2024 D130 will come exclusively in Carpathian Grey or Santorini Black, both with a Black Contrast Roof. Like its D110 V8 sibling, it will have quad exhausts. It will also have V8 badging, LED headlights, darkened taillights, privacy glass, and 22-inch Satin Dark Grey alloy wheels.

Inside you get a Sliding Panoramic Roof and a 14-way adjustable heated and cooled driver seat. The only interior material configuration on offer is Ebony Windsor Leather with Dinamica suede cloth and Robustec fabric. That configuration features a suede cloth heated steering wheel, an Ebony Morzine headline, and a Satin Black cross-car beam.

Additional standard 2023 D130 V8 features include Four-Zone Climate Control, heated/cooled seats in the second row, heated third-row seats, a Meridian Sound System, Head-Up Display, and Cabin Air Purification Plus.

Pricing for the 2024 Land Rover Defender 130 V8 starts at $116,600. That’s a $16,700 premium over the next most expensive 2024 D130, the X trim, but does come with a lot of standard equipment.

The 2024 Land Rover Defender 130 Outbound edition is instantly recognizable because of its body-colored rear signature panels and D-pillar finishers, versus the windows you’ll find on all other D130 models. Inside the D130 Outbound comes exclusively with five seats, versus the eight found in the other models.

The D130 Outbound comes exclusively with the V6 mild hybrid (P400) powertrain. Sadly, the new V8 option isn’t available in the Outbound. Even with the V6, the D130 Outbound can still tow up to 8,200 pounds.

Besides the obvious side panels, you’ll also be able to differentiate the Outbound model from the other D130 pretty easily. The vehicle features its Shadow Atlas Matte finish to the bumpers and grille insert and side vents finished in Anthracite. Standard are Gloss Black 20-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires. Optional are 22-inch wheels in Shadow Atlas Matte.

Inside the 2024 D130 Outbound, you can choose between full Windsor leather or a Resist fabric interior. Either way, it will be an all-black interior, with an Ebony Morzine headliner, Robustec veneer, and Satin Black Powder Coat Brushed finish cross-car beam.

You’ll also get rubber floor mats throughout, including a cargo area mat that can be folded down to protect the bumper when loading bulky gear. Land Rover also says that “additional storage areas store smaller items out of sight, while extra lashing points and a new cargo net.”

With the second-row seats in use, you’ll get 46.93 cubic feet of cargo space. With the rear seats folded, you’ll get a very impressive 88.85 cubic feet. You also get a near-flat loadspace floor behind the second row that is 49.88 inches long.

All this equates to a clean-looking and highly functional SUV ready for big on- and off-road adventures with a few of your friends or family of up to five. Pricing isn’t inexpensive, but it does present a pretty good value in today’s market, starting at $84,500.

2024 Land Rover Defender Updates

Additionally, for 2024 the Defender 110 gets the same 493-horsepower V8 option as the D130. It will be offered on the SE trim level, which means you can now get into a D110 with V8 starting at $93,000, versus $111,500 for the D110 V8 model that offers more luxury and 25 more horsepower.

Land Rover has an iconic heritage and it continues to lean into that with throwback editions and options. For 2024, you can get a D110 with a new $600 Country Exterior Pack. It will be available on S and SE trim levels.

The Defender 110 Country package includes; Country graphics, illuminated treadplates, and 20-inch steelie-looking alloys available in two finishes (including white). On offer will be three color combos: Fuji White body with Tasman Blue roof/tailgate/graphics, Santorini Black with Tasman Blue roof/tailgate/graphics, and Tasman Blue body with White roof/tailgate/graphics.

All 2024 Land Rover Defenders are available to order now. We’re stoked about the D130 V8 but saddened the adventure-oriented Outbound model won’t be available with one.
