A.T. Shoes – Brooks PureGrit 4 & Cascadia 10
Most long distance through-hikers wear trail-running shoes these days, not boots, and Jurek is no different. He chose two models from Brooks, the Pure Grit 4 and Cascadia 10.
“I’d worked a lot on the design of the Pure Grit 4, but hadn’t had the chance to wear test them yet as I’m a size 11.5,” Jurek said. “I’d been working on that shoe for four generations, and the Cascadias for 11 years. I chose the two for protection, low profile, and for something like the AT, to hold up really well.”
Jurek said he got 400+ miles on each pair. They held up to the wear and tear on the A.T., which is known to shred shoes.
In all, Jurek wore through six pair of Pure Grit 4s and two pair of Cascadias on the hike. “I got two small blisters the whole time. They work well out of the box. No break-in time, just put them on and go,” he said.
