Our “From The Field” column gives a quick look at gear in testing from the GearJunkie staff and readers around the world.
The Scene: After four days of chasing trout around the rivers of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, Conner Lundeen landed this beautiful female steelhead while fishing near the town of Baldwin on the Pere Marquette River.
The Gear: With temperatures barely above freezing, Lundeen credits his Simms ExStreame Foldover Mittens ($60) for keeping his hands warm and dry while fishing. The mitts have water-resistant Polartec Powershield Pro insulation and a DWR-coated exterior to make sure they don’t soak up water. They fold back to expose fingers when the need for dexterity arises.
Feedback: “Standing or wading in cold water makes it easy for fingers to get wet and cold. I can easily pull the end [of the mitts] off my fingers and thumb to make it easier to tie on new flies and work with my line, or flip them back over to stay warm when needed.”
