Anthony Sculimbrene is a writer for Gear Junkie. He has been writing about knives and other everyday carry gear for more than a decade. He has written for numerous digital and print sources in those years. He has also cultivated relationships with people throughout the gear world both through his reviews and his work on knife laws. Readers and gear companies look to his reviews because he is “connecting the dots in the knife industry in a way that adds distinct clarity to trends with facts, figures, and specs that cling to his mind with near-photographic precision.” He enjoys reveling in the details of good design and the history of gear.
He began writing about gear after posting his own metric for purchasing knives and flashlights on a forum. After dozens of requests, that metric developed into a scoring system he has used on his own personal site. He has posted at least one new article or review every week for more than 13 years. He also ran one of the first EDC podcasts—Gear Geeks Live—for three years interviewing knife designers, industry people, and custom makers including Lucas Burnley, Jesse Jarosz, and the greatest knife maker of all time, Michael Walker.
Anthony Sculimbrene is a lawyer and part of his work focuses on knife laws. He is a legal consultant for AKTI (American Knife and Tool Institute), an industry advocacy and trade group that is working to reform knife laws in the United States. In this role he answers questions from knife owners and media on knife laws, stays abreast of developments in knife laws and the Second Amendment, and helps with legislative efforts to reform knife laws around the country.
A Word From Anthony Sculimbrene
I am grateful that I have been lucky enough to write about gear for more than a decade. Doing so has opened so many doors and yielded friends and interesting contacts all over the world. My reviews strive to be clear, unswayed by trends or what’s popular, and fun to read. My writing has also introduced to me some of the most knowledgeable people in the world on knives and other EDC gear. If I don’t know the answer, I know exactly who does.
Writing gear reviews is a counterbalance to my day job—working as a lawyer. In 2019 I started a firm with a friend, Gill & Sculimbrene, and we have been working hard and taking cases we believe in ever since. I have handled every kind of criminal case imaginable from juvenile cases to murders to multi-person drug network cases. We also do civil rights cases and education discipline cases. I strive to provide superior representation to clients in complex, challenging, and difficult matters. As a result, reviewing knives is a great outlet for me personally.
In addition to law and writing about gear, I am a father to two wild and fun boys, a husband, and I enjoy being outdoors, woodworking, and making sure that my wood stove has plenty of fuel for cold New England winters. I follow the Red Sox with a forlorn soul since they traded Mookie Betts.
